Oldenburg is a historic city that was once the capital of an independent principality. Its main monument is the baroque castle, which is now the seat of a museum presenting a rich collection of art.
The history of the city begins in the Middle Ages and is associated with the existence of the independent principality of Oldenburg. The local gothic Oldenburg Castle was rebuilt in the Renaissance style in the 16th century, and in the 18th century it was given the features of a magnificent Baroque residence. To this day, its interiors have retained their original appearance with magnificent hall decorations and rich décor. They present collections of art from the Middle Ages to the 18th century and a collection of artistic crafts. The Castle Garden in Oldenburg stretches around the castle, and the State Museum of Art and History with the collections of, among others, ancient items from the Mediterranean Basin.
In addition to the castle, which is the greatest attraction of Oldenburg, the 19th-century Ducal Palace and the Church of St. Lambert, erected on a circular plan. The 19th century roots are in the Museum of Nature and Man, of which the Aquarium is a part.
Another big attraction of the city is the Botanical Garden, established in the second half of the 19th century and being a charming place for relaxation.
