State Coin Collection
Local name: Staatliche Münzsammlung
Staatliche Münzsammlung is the main numismatic collection of Bavaria, exhibited in the Residenz complex. There are about 300,000 exhibits - coins, banknotes and medals from around the world. The oldest of them are dated to the third millennium BC. The collection is presented in the form of thematic temporary exhibitions.
The creation of the collection began during the rule of the Bavarian prince Albrecht V. At the end of the 16th century, it numbered over 7,000 coins. Albrecht's successors gradually increased their collections. Initially, interest was mainly in antique coins, and from the nineteenth century, began to collect medieval and newer coins, as well as banknotes and objects of medallion art.
During World War II, the collection building was destroyed, but the collections, taken from the museum, survived intact. They have been constantly on display since 1963, when the Residenz complex was opened to the public.
