The Charles Tower, also known as the Charles Gate, is one of the three existing, former, medieval city gates in Munich today. It was a fragment of the medieval defensive walls surrounding the city. Today it is part of the Neuhauser Strasse pedestrian street.
The gate was built around 1300 and it consisted of three towers. The gate was connected to the barbican by a bridge on the other side of the moat. In the nineteenth century, the middle tower was demolished due to the explosion of gunpowder, which significantly damaged it.
The other two towers were connected by an arch, which allowed traffic under the gate and this is the form it presents today. Over time, the medieval defensive walls lost their importance and were demolished. The Charles Gate is one of the memorabilia of the fortifications. It was reconstructed after the destruction during World War II.
