Japanese Tea House Kanshoan
Local name: Japanisches Teehaus Kanshoan
The Japanese Kanshoan Tea Room in Munich is part of the English Garden in the Bavarian capital. It is located on a small island in a part of the park called the Japanese Garden. A traditional Japanese tea ceremony takes place here regularly. Every year, on the third of July, "Japanfest" takes place.
The Kanshoan Tea Room was established on the occasion of the 1972 Summer Olympic Games in Munich and the city's partnership with the Japanese Sapporo, the site of the Winter Olympic Games. The island where the tea room is located was built in 1969 according to the design of Schwabinger Bach,
The tearoom was a gift to Bavaria from Soshitsu Sen, head of the Urasenke Tea School in Kyoto, and was designed by Soshitsu Sen and Mitsuo Nomura. The architecture of the building and park assumptions are to refer to the classic Japanese style. In 2008, the building received a new roof made of wood.
