Mineralogical Museum

Local name: Mineralogisches Museum

The collections of the Mineralogical Museum of the University of Hamburg include minerals, ores, precious stones, rocks and meteorites. This collection is one of the largest of its kind in Germany - it has over 90,000 objects, including over 900 meteorites.

The museum's collection includes such unique exhibits as the 424-kilo Gibeon - a meteorite from Namibia or the world's largest crystal of antimony from Japan. However, the greater part of the exhibition is devoted to minerals. Other exhibition topics include meteorites, jewelry and precious stones, as well as rocks. Due to the close symbiosis with the University and the institution's profile, the exhibits are presented as works of nature art.

On specific days and opening hours of the museum, visitors can bring their own findings for examination by experts (free of charge). Specialists also offer a paid service of examining gemstones and pearls for authenticity.
