One of the largest collections of religious art in Germany. Includes items primarily from the former female abbey in Essen, but also items from many other cities in western Germany. Among the most valuable exhibits are the Golden Madonna from 980, luminous ivory-colored evangelists, richly decorated medieval processional crosses and tabular painting.
