The Zollverein industrial complex was built in the second half. Of the 19th century and includes a coal mine and a coking plant. It has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2001. Currently, the facility has, among others, The Ruhr Museum, the Design Museum, a ceramic workshop, a modern art park, as well as a swimming pool, ice rink, restaurants and cafes. The 'House of Coal' educational trail is also located within the former mine.
The name of the industrial complex comes from the nineteenth century economic organization - the German Customs Union (Deutscher Zollverein), which played an important role in the unification of Germany.
The redeveloped buildings of the complex are also currently the seat of North Rhine-Westphalia Design Center and North Rhine-Westphalia choreographic center - PACT Zollverein.
