The museum is dedicated to the natural history as well as the history and culture of the Ruhr. The permanent exhibition includes 6,000 exhibits, divided into archaeological, natural, geological, historical and industrial collections.
Geological collections present the history of the Earth and the development of life. It is worth paying attention to the diorama measuring 8 m long, 5 m deep and 3.6 m high. It illustrates the environment of marshy forests from 300 million years ago and the process of carbon formation. Among the natural collections you can see, among others the taxidermy of various species of mammals, birds and other animals inhabiting the Ruhr area.
A large part of the collection also shows the industrial era, so important for the history and economy of the region and the whole country. It is worth mentioning that the Ruhr region has one of the world's largest deposits of hard coal, rock salt, zinc ore and lead.
