Emden is a city at the mouth of the Ems River into the North Sea. It is a good starting point for the East Frisian Islands and the seat of several interesting museums.
Although the city was founded in the Middle Ages and was a significant seaport, today you can not find too many monuments here. It is associated with very large damage from World War II. Over 80% of its buildings were demolished in the raids. Only a few old buildings have survived, such as the 17th century New Church or several tenement houses.
His museums are the pride of Emden. The most important of them is Dat Otto Huus dedicated to one of the most famous German comedians. The East Frisian National Museum shows the history and culture of the region, with particular emphasis on relationships with the sea. In turn, the Emden Art Gallery presents collections of painting, sculpture and contemporary photography.
The Feuerschiff Amrumbank Museum is an unusual building. It is a former lighthouse that from 1915 to 1983 was used for signaling purposes in the North Sea. Today it is moored at the waterfront in Emden and is open to the public. It can also be rented for family or outdoor events.
