St. Mary's Church

Local name: Sankt Marienkirche

Sankt Marienkirche is a Gothic Lutheran church first mentioned in 1291. It was rebuilt several times, consumed by numerous fires, and was severely damaged during World War II. The most important elements of the 18th-century church interior have been preserved, including the oldest - polychrome representation of "Dance of Death" from 1484 and a Gothic bronze baptismal font from 1437.

Other historic elements of the church's furnishings include, above all, the 18th-century main altar from 1762, which contains paintings by Christian Bernhard Rode and the organ created by Joachim Wagner - the famous creator of over 50 organs. There is also a tombstone of Otto Christoph von Sparr - commander of the Brandenburg army during the Swedish Deluge (he distinguished himself during the battle of Warsaw).

In front of the church stands a stone cross commemorating the murder of Monsignor Nikolaus von Bernau in 1325. The crowd, enraged by a sermon questioning the validity of the choice of the emperor without the consent of Rome, stoned to death and then burned the prelate's corpse.
