Red Townhall

Local name: Rotes Rathaus

Rotes Rathaus, or the Red Town Hall, is a neo-Renaissance building erected in 1861–1869 by architect Hermann Friedrich Wäsemann for the seat of the Berlin authorities. The impressive edifice occupies a square measuring 99 by 89 m, rises to a height of 27 m, and the tower reaches 74 m. Its name comes from the color of the walls, which were clad with red brick.

The town hall tower has a clock whose dials have a diameter of 4.75 m - minute hands are 2.5 m long and hourly hands are 1.3 m long. At the first floor level there is a terracotta frieze consisting of 36 panels with dimensions of 4 on 6 m, which presents the most important events in the history of Berlin and Brandenburg from the 12th to the end of the 19th century

Rotes Rathaus was destroyed in 50 percent during World War II. The reconstruction carried out in 1951-1958 restored it to its original style, which is referred to as a mixture of Italian elements, Brandenburg architecture, Romanesque arched forms and Renaissance details.
