The Märkisches Museum, or Brandenburg Museum, was established as a social initiative in 1874. Since 1908, it has been located in its present headquarters - considered to be the first building in the world erected especially for the needs of organizing the city museum. As the name suggests, the museum presents exhibitions dedicated to the history of Berlin and Brandenburg. It also offers visiting arranged spaces of the Armory, Guild Hall and Gothic Chapel.
The Märkisches Museum project was the first major contract of the newly appointed director of urban planning and construction of the city of Berlin, Ludwig Hoffmann. His concept was based on the close relationship between the architecture of the building and what will be presented in the interiors. A building was created, whose various parts are references and quotes from various architectural styles. Similarly, Hoffmann treated interiors, e.g. for a collection of medieval chapels and sculptures, he created a room called the Chapel, whose vaults modeled on medieval buildings. This is how about 50 different exhibition spaces were created.
