L'Étang-Salé is a holiday town in Reunion. It is situated on the coast, next to a black volcanic beach. Due to the good wind conditions and high waves it is a good place to go surfing.
Étang-Salé Beach is covered with black volcanic sand. From the land side, it is limited by a palm grove and coastal thickets. There are separate bathing areas with the supervision of lifeguards and nets stretched in the water to protect against sharks. This area of the coast is also popular with surfers who find here convenient waves at any time of the year.
In addition to the holiday beach within L'Étang-Salé, there is also a fragment of the wild coast which is a popular tourist attraction. There is a natural channel carved by the water in the rock, Le Gouffre de l'Étang-Salé, which fills with water as the waves flow. The family attraction of the area is the Crocodile Park, where these animals can be seen on secured enclosures.
