Vence is a historic Provencal town that has delighted many writers and artists in the past. Witold Gombrowicz spent the last years of his life here, and Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall decorated the local churches
The history of Vence dates back to Roman times, and the cathedral here dates back to the 6th century. Rebuilt many times, it retained early Christian and Romanesque features. In 1911, the mosaic was created by Marc Chagall. The old town of Vence stretches around the cathedral, a tour of which is a wandering through narrow streets among colorful tenement houses and shaded squares.
Outside the old town is the former castle of Villeneuve, which houses the Museum of Contemporary Art. In this part of the city you can also see one of the most important historical attractions of Vence, the Rosary Chapel. Its interior is decorated with paintings by Henri Matisse.
Due to the friendly atmosphere, beautiful views and Mediterranean climate, Vence has been eagerly visited by representatives of the bohemia, including painters and writers since the 19th century. For the last five years of his life, Witold Gombrowicz and his wife Rita lived here, and his grave is located in the municipal cemetery in Vence.
