The public and university library, which has more than two million documents in its collection, largely inherited from the Abbey of Saint Geneva. It is the third largest library in Europe.
Library collections are made available for students, but also for every adult person. They are divided into three subsets: rare, mainly ancient books and volumes, general books and magazines from 1871 to the present day, and the Nordic Library, which offers a rich Fenno-Scandinavian collection. The latter subset is also the largest collection of this type, not counting the original Scandinavian libraries.
The architectural style of the building is strict, but an interesting element of decoration is 810 names engraved on its outside. They are arranged in chronological order, from Moses to Berzelius, a Swedish chemist who died in 1848.
