Place Vendome is located in the very center of Paris. It has an octagonal shape with rounded corners. It is surrounded by monumental classicist tenements. In the center stands the Vendome Column, crowned with a sculpture of Napoleon in Roman costume.
The square was marked out during the time of Louis XIV and until the French Revolution his equestrian statue stood on it. During Napoleon's reign, a 43-meter high Vendome Column was melted from cannons captured at the Battle of Austerlitz. At its top there is a sculpture depicting Napoleon as a Roman emperor. The monument was modeled on the Trajan's Column in Rome.
Fryderyk Chopin died in house No. 12 at Plac Vendome. A plaque on the facade reminds you of this. In 1898, the Ritz Hotel was built at number 15, where Coco Chanel and Marcel Proust lived, among others.
