The Gustave Moreau Museum is located in Montmartre, Paris, in the artist and bohemian district. It shows the life and work of the French symbolist Gustave Moreau, who lived in the second half of the 19th century. Sketches, watercolors and larger painting forms are presented in the three-story house. You can also see the original interior of the artist's house and his studio.
Gustave Moreau died in 1898. Two years before his death, he gave all his legacy, including his home, to the state. The museum was opened in 1902 after cataloging works and adapting the building for sightseeing.
The museum has over 10,000 exhibits. Mostau's drawings and sketches are primarily on the ground floor. Above you can see a completely furnished apartment occupied by the artist's family and his studio. Here are shown the larger works of one of the greatest French symbolists. The museum still maintains the atmosphere of a bourgeois, artistic home from the late nineteenth century. It is also the main center of research on the work of Moreau.
