The gallery is home to many institutions related to the history of art and cultural heritage of the country. Visitors can take part in exhibitions presenting achievements in the field of historical research, art and culture, or presenting the profiles and works of outstanding artists.
Its architecture is an undoubted advantage of this place. The building itself dates from 1823. It also has an Art Nouveau-style dome topped with a glass roof. The interior is decorated with many characteristic marble columns, mosaics and crystal candelabra. At the entrance to the dome is Le Grand Colbert, a historic monument often used in the cinema.
The name of the gallery comes from the name of Hotel Colbert, which used to be adjacent to the building.
