Cognacq-Jay Museum

Local name: Musée Cognacq-Jay

The Musee Cognacq-Jay Museum is an art collection from the 17th and 19th centuries located in the former Donon Hotel. The main focus in the collection is on the 18th century. You can see paintings, sculptures, jewelry, furniture, ceramics and handicrafts.

The museum was founded in 1929. This is a collection donated to the state by the marriage of entrepreneurs, Théodore-Ernest Cognacq and Marie-Louise Jay, the creators of the La Samaritaine department store. They were art lovers. Their private collections focused primarily on French art from the 18th century, but they also included two paintings by Rembrandt, works by Cezanne, Degas or Corot.

The exhibition is presented in the original eighteenth-century interiors of the Donon Hotel, which was owned by the Cognacq-Jay marriage. These rooms are decorated in the style of Louis XV and Louis XVI, which correspond perfectly with the works of art placed here. The exhibition has over 1000 various elements, and among the creators of the works shown are Canaletto, Tiepolo, Saly and Fragonard.
