MODANE tourist attractions

+1 attraction

Modane is an alpine village located on the Franco-Italian border and the entrance to the international Frejus tunnel. In winter, there is a ski center here, and in summer, the whole area invites to hiking.

The importance of the mountain village grew in the second half of the 19th century with the construction of the Frejus railway tunnel, which allowed for a quick journey to Italy. Its monumental stone inlet is today one of the monuments of the town. While visiting Modane, you can also see the small Romanesque chapel of St. Jakub, a 19th-century powder magazine in which explosives were stored in the event of the tunnel having to be filled in, and a fort to protect it in the event of war.

The biggest attractions of Modane, however, are related to the possibilities of active tourism. In winter, the Valfréjus ski resort with several dozen kilometers of slopes operates here. The village is situated on the border of the Vanoise National Park with many hiking trails. They lead to the surrounding ridges and peaks, which reach a height of more than 2,500 m above sea level
