Menton is a charming city on the Cote d'Azur. Situated on the slope of rocky mountains descending into the sea, it looks very picturesque. The upper, historic part is located above the port, and a little further, modern buildings with hotels and guesthouses adjoin small beaches.
The city consists of two clearly separated parts. Old buildings dominate the port, where fishing boats are still moored, but also yachts and tourist boats. Narrow streets, tightly huddled tenement houses and the church tower create a beautiful picture in conjunction with the mountain slopes. There are many restaurants and atmospheric cafes, as well as shops with handicrafts and souvenirs.
The lower part closer to the beach includes, apart from new houses, also hotels, guesthouses and apartment buildings. Although the beaches here are quite narrow, the beautiful surroundings and excellent infrastructure attract crowds of tourists each year.
A big attraction of Menton is the Lemon Festival, which takes place every spring, with a colorful parade, dances and a fair. Outside of the festival time, many shops offer lemon products, including syrups, tinctures, liqueurs and dried peel.
