Cancale is a small town in Brittany, on the west side of the Bay of Mont Saint Michel. It is known as one of the main oyster farming centers in the region, and oyster farms are located along the entire coast.
The village has low buildings with lots of stone houses with colorful shutters. There is a stone pier and a promenade above the beach. The beaches are sandy, but quite narrow and depend heavily on sea tides. There are also many picturesque rocks around the town that separate individual fragments of the coast.
Cancale is a good starting point for hiking trips to the Pointe du Grouin peninsula. A fragment of the Grande Randonnée long distance walking trail runs through it, which eventually leads to Spain. The peninsula is very picturesque and has beautiful views of the Bay of Mont Saint Michel.
The coastal town is a well-known oyster production center. The local coastal waters are used for breeding these clams, and there is a market every day on the pier where oysters straight from the sea are sold. There are also many restaurants and bars specializing in preparing oyster dishes.
