The 487-meter stone-brick arch bridge was built in 1810-1822 by order of Napoleon I. The construction was stopped after the fall of the empire - its completion and opening of the bridge became possible thanks to the funds of the local association of buyers and shipowners who were getting richer on road tolls bridge through the Bordeaux authorities in 1863.
