The Gironde Monument is a monumental column standing on the Quinconces Square in the center of Bordeaux. It is surrounded by a fountain with carved allegories of Lies, Ignorance and Corruption. At the top there is a female figure symbolizing freedom.
The Girondists were an informal group active during the French Revolution. Because of their views, they were accused of wanting to divide the state and damage the cause of the revolution. 22 movement leaders were tried and executed in Bordeaux. Their monument was erected at the end of the 19th century.
The monument consists of a white column on a pedestal and the fountain surrounding it. The pedestal is decorated with allegorical figures of Consent, Republic, History and the art of pronunciation. Three symbols of vices contrast with them, which led to the outbreak of revolution, i.e. Lies, Corruption and Ignorance.
