BAGNÈRES-DE-LUCHON tourist attractions

+1 attraction

Bagnères-de-Luchon is a thermal spa in the Pyrenees and a famous ski resort. It is a center of active tourism with access to numerous hiking trails and scenic peaks.

The thermal waters of Bagnères-de-Luchon were known already in Roman times, but were forgotten after the fall of the Empire. Their rediscovery was made only in the 18th century thanks to the baron d'Etigny. At his instigation, representatives of the French aristocracy began to come here, and in the second half of the nineteenth century, even Napoleon III's wife, Eugenia, visited here. Another development of the spa took place in the interwar period, when the Superbagnères ski station was built above the village. Today it is connected with the town by a cable car.

The biggest attractions of Bagnères-de-Luchon are related to the possibility of active tourism. In summer, the entire area invites to hiking, and the higher routes can be reached by cable car. In winter, skiers can enjoy several dozen kilometers of well-prepared ski trails. The local thermal center operates all year round, offering both therapeutic stays as well as rest and regeneration after mountain and skiing activities.
