The neo-Renaissance castle Hruby Rohozec is located in the picturesque region of Bohemian Paradise. It is a building that dates back to the 13th century, but owes its present appearance to the 19th century reconstruction. The castle has the shape of an irregular quadrangle with a tower above the entrance and a yard surrounded by arcades. Some of the interior fittings have survived.
Initially, the castle belonged to various factions of the Vartenberg family. He was taken from them after the Thirty Years' War for taking the anti-Habsburg side. In the 17th century it came into the hands of the Des Fours Walderode family from Lorraine. They were the owners of the property until the end of World War II. In the nineteenth century, they rebuilt the castle into a modern residence and surrounded it with an English-style park.
Currently, the castle interiors are open to the public. Here you can see over twenty originally furnished rooms. A library with valuable old prints and manuscripts has also survived. The castle rooms present furniture, costumes and everyday objects collections from the Renaissance to the Art Nouveau collections from the Prague Museum of Industrial Design.
