Villa Müller

Local name: Villa Müller

The Müller Villa in Prague, also known as the Villa Loosa, is a luxury villa exemplifying the early modernism of single-family homes. The villa functioned as a family residence and was built for this purpose, but today it houses a city museum dedicated to modernism and the Müller family.

The villa was built in 1928 - 1930 at the request of Franciszek Müller, according to the design of the architect Adolf Loos, in cooperation with Karl Lhota. During socialism, the building was nationalized, and only two rooms were available for the widow of Müller. Mrs. Müller herself collected objects and family souvenirs as well as home furnishings.

At that time, state institutions operated here, including Pedagogical Publishing House, Museum of Applied Arts, National Gallery, Monument of Culture of the Czechoslovak Republic and the Institute of Marxism-Leninism. After the fall of communism, the villa returned to the family ownership of the Müllers, who sold the villa to the state for museum purposes.
