Táborská Gate

Local name: Táborská Brána

One of four, next to Ceglana (Cihelná, Chotkova), Pisecka and Leopold, preserved gates of the Visegrad Fortress. The old road from Tabor to Prague, running from the south, leads to it, from which the gate took its name. It was built in 1655 during the general reconstruction of the fortress in the architectural style, known as the late Renaissance or early baroque.

It probably took its place or was created as a result of the reconstruction of a defensive gate that existed here much earlier.
Táborská Brána is a building whose form indicates a definitely defensive purpose: a wall made of sandstone blocks, no facade decorations, four narrow windows and a blank finial. The gate was the first defensive point - the first bridgehead of the fortress.

Above the oval portal of the gate were three rooms - one for the officer, service for the raised gate grille and a narrow room for shooters. In the nineteenth century, when the fortress lost its defensive function, the grille was replaced with beautifully forged iron gates. In the years 2002–2003 the gate was restored, mainly renovating the damaged facade.
