The Botanical Garden of Charles University in Prague conducts expositions and collects plants in greenhouses. The outdoor exhibition counts about 3000 plant species and presents Central European flora. Greenhouse exhibits present a permanent exposition of tropical and subtropical plants. cacti, palm and citrus.
The garden has an area of 3.5 hectares. There are exhibits devoted to vegetation from all continents. The Botanical Garden of the University of Charles was founded by Josef Bohumír Mikan in 1775 in Smíchov in the former Jesuit garden. After the flood in 1890 the botanical garden moved to the New Town of Prague.
Then the garden was divided into Czech and German. During World War II the Czech part of the garden was incorporated into German. At the end of the war, during the Allied air raids, the garden was destroyed. Czech greenhouses were rebuilt just after the war, and the German part was renovated much later.
