Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola

Local name: Kostel sv. Ignáce z Loyoly

Baroque church of St. Ignacy Loyola in the New Town belongs to the oldest baroque buildings in Prague. This church is a temple of the Jesuit order. The interiors are decorated with paintings, stucco and statues of Jesuits and Czech saints. At the top of the church facade is a statue of St. Ignacy Loyola.

The church Ignacy Loyola was built in the second half of the seventeenth century on the site of several earlier medieval houses. The architect and designer of the temple was Carlo Lurago, modeled on the main Roman Jesuit church Il Gesù, which was a model and example for many Baroque temples.

The paintings inside the church were made by Jan Jiří Heintsch, while the sculptural decorations are made by Matěj Václav Jäckel, whose work is known mainly from the Charles Bridge. An interesting fact is the sculpture of St. Ignacy Loyola with a halo, which at that time was a big surprise, because the halo was reserved only for the figure of Jesus Christ and the Mother of God.
