Štefánik Observatory

Local name: Štefánikova hvězdárna

The Štefánik Observatory on the Petřínín Hill in Prague is open to the public and serves primarily to promote astronomy. The main dome houses the Zeiss telescope, the west dome the Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope, while the eastern dome houses the Meade 40 cm mirror telescope.

The Štefánik Observatory was founded in 1928. It owes its name to the Slovak astronomer and politician Milan Rastislav Štefánik. As part of the observatory's activities, lectures and exhibitions are conducted. An astronomical circle is provided for young people. A two-year astronomical course is organized for the elderly.

Observation of planets and deep sky objects is available to visitors from October to March in the evening. However, from April to September in the afternoon sun observations take place here. Urns of Czech astronomers - Jaroslav Štych and Karl Anděl - were assembled in the pillars of the main telescope.
