The Municipal House in Prague is an Art Nouveau building. Inside there is a concert hall named after Fryderyk Smetana, exhibition halls, restaurants, cafes and an information center. Concerts, exhibitions and other cultural and social events take place in the Municipal House.
In the place where today the Municipal House is located was the Royal Palace in Prague, the former residence of the Czech kings. The Municipal House was built in the years 1905 - 1912 according to the design of the architects Osvald Polívka and Antonín Balšánek. On October 28, 1918, the independence of Czechoslovakia was proclaimed here.
Czech painters and sculptors from the beginning of the 20th century are responsible for the interior design of the Municipal House: Alfons Mucha, Josef Václav Myslbek, František Ženíšek, Max Švabinský, Jan Preisler, Josef Mařatka, Karel Novák, Ladislav Šaloun and Mikoláš Aleš. A semi-circular mosaic by Karl Špillar was placed on the facade of the building.
