Pinkas Synagogue

Local name: Pinkasova synagoga

Located inside: Josefov

The Pinkas Synagogue is located in the Jewish quarter of Prague next to the Old Jewish Cemetery. It is a Renaissance building with elements of late Gothic. Today, there is the Jewish Museum, in which 77297 names of Czech and Moravian Jews murdered during the Holocaust were placed on the walls.

The Pinkas Synagogue is currently the second oldest preserved synagogue in Prague. It was built by the architect Juda Goldschmied-Coref de Herz on the initiative of Meszullam Zalman Aharon Horowitz in the first half of the 16th century. The oldest buildings in the synagogue, the remains of the well and the mikvah, i.e. the ritual bathhouse, come from the end of the 15th century.

In its history, the Pinkas synagogue in Prague has been rebuilt several times, numerous conservation works have been carried out and many discoveries have been made. During the communist period, in the 1960s, wall paintings were discovered and the oldest objects from before the synagogue were discovered.
