Klaus Synagogue in Prague

Local name: Synagoga Klausa w Pradze

Located inside: Josefov

The baroque Klaus synagogue in Prague is located next to the Old Jewish Cemetery in the former Jewish ghetto. It houses the Jewish Museum with the exhibition "Jewish traditions and customs". In the main nave and cloisters, exhibits related to the meaning of the synagogue, Jewish holidays and everyday life of the Jewish family are presented.

The Klaus Synagogue was built in the years 1689 - 1694 on the initiative of Salamoun Chalisz Kohen. She stood in the place of three small buildings called klaus, which housed the synagogue, mikvah and Talmudic school in turn. In the years 1883-1884, the synagogue was rebuilt according to the plans of the architect Bedřich Münzberger.

For many years, only members of the Prague Funeral Brotherhood - Chevra Kadisha prayed in the synagogue. During World War II, the Klaus Synagogue also contained the magazine and exhibition of the Jewish Central War Museum. After the war, the synagogue underwent several major renovations.
