Church of St. Giles

Local name: Kostel svatého Jiljí

The church Idzi in Prague is the monastery church of the Dominican Fathers and the parish church of the Polish parish in Prague, whose patron is St. Pope John Paul II. The church dates back to Romanesque times, has Gothic elements and baroque finish. Among others historic altars, presbytery, bells "Dominic" and "Maria".

The first mention of the temple dates back to 1238. There was a Romanesque church here, which was rebuilt in the Gothic style at the end of the 13th century. Another reconstruction took place in the fourteenth century under the leadership of the Prague bishop Jan IV of Dražice, his work was continued by the Archbishop of Prague Arnošt of Pardubice.

In the 17th century, the church passed into the hands of the Dominican Order and a large four-wing monastery was built next to the church, designed by Italian architects C. Lurago and GB Orsi. The temple acquired its today's Baroque architectural decor after 1731. The authors of the reconstruction were the architects F. Špaček and FM Kaňka.
