The Church of Our Lady of the Snows is located in the New Town and is the highest Gothic religious building in Prague. It is only the presbytery of the unfinished church, which still impresses with its size. The Gothic building was obtained in the 17th century baroque decor. Inside you can see the largest baroque altar in the Czech Republic with a picture depicting the legend of the construction of the Church of Our Lady of the Snows in Rome.
The founder of the church was King Charles IV. He wanted to build a coronation church that would match St. Vitus's Cathedral. Until the Hussite wars, which interrupted the work, only the presbytery was put up. After a period of wars, fires and disasters in the 17th century, the destroyed presbytery was handed over to the Franciscans who look after the church to this day.
The interior of the church comes from the time of the Baroque reconstruction. You can see the 18th century picture of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary by Wacław Wawrzyniec Reiner. The main altar was built in the workshop of Heidelberger, who in the 17th century worked for the most important Prague magnate families.
