Mikulov Square

Local name: Mikulovské náměstí

The Mikulov Square was built in the 16th century, when the city center was moved closer to the castle. It is a paved square surrounded by Renaissance, Baroque and Classicist tenements. There is a baroque fountain with the figure of the nymph of Pomona and the Plague Column from the 18th century.

Houses standing by the market were built from the end of the 16th century. However, only two of them have retained their original facades. Dom U Rytířů is the most outstanding here. It has a facade decorated with sgraffito decoration. An arcaded courtyard has also been preserved. The Renaissance facade is also decorated with the House of Canons. Its interiors, however, are much later because in the 18th century they were consumed by fire.

The most famous buildings of the market are a polygonal stone fountain and the Plague Column. The first of them is decorated with a sculpture of an Etruscan nymph that holds a cornucopia in its hands. The Plague Column was erected as a vote for the disappearance of the plague of diseases that devastated the area at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. On the triple colonnade stands a soaring pyramid surrounded by the image of the Holy Trinity and angels. The figures of saints Franciszek Ksawery, Karol Boromeusz and Jan Nepomucen were also placed here.
