Grabstejn Castle

Local name: Hrad Grabštejn

Grabstejn Castle is located on an elevated landscape park above the Nysa valley. It is a Renaissance building with a massive round tower that offers a beautiful view of the Czech-German-Polish border. Inside, you can see exhibitions devoted to local crafts and furnished and equipped rooms.

Grabstejn is one of the first castles in northern Bohemia. After these territories were incorporated into the Czech state, a royal stronghold stood here, later transformed into a castle. The 13th-century Gothic building was rebuilt several times, and the Renaissance appearance that it has survived to this day was obtained in the 16th century. The castle has been open to visitors since 1993. At the same time, further reconstruction work is underway.

From the original Gothic castle only cellars have survived to this day. The vaulted basements present craft products and tools, forge equipment and precious stone processing. On the upper floors there are restored rooms furnished with Renaissance and Baroque equipment. A very valuable monument is the Renaissance chapel of Saint Barbara, in which original frescoes from this period have been preserved.
