The Ethnographic Museum (Etnografski muzej) in Zagreb gathered over 80,000 exhibits related to the folk culture of Croatia. traditional costumes from various regions of the country, handicrafts and examples of folk handicrafts.
The museum collection includes: folk instruments, jewelry, ceramics and baskets, items used on a daily basis in traditional farms, stone and wood ornaments, as well as items related to old beliefs and rituals related to them.
The museum was founded in the first half of the 20th century on the initiative of a Slovak industrialist and textile dealer - Salomon Berger. He became the first director of the facility. The museum's headquarters is in an Art Nouveau building from 1903.
An important figure associated with the museum was Professor Vladimir Tkalčić, who dealt with thorough research on folk handicrafts, is the author of valuable publications on, among others Croatian lace.
