Church of St. Francis

Local name: Crkva sv. Franje

The church Francis in Zagreb was built in the thirteenth century as part of the monastery complex belonging to the Franciscan order. Its interior still hides many valuable monuments of sacred art, you can see, for example, a neo-Gothic altar with a picture of the figure of St. Francis - the work of Celestin Medović and stained glass windows by Ivo Dulcić.

Originally, the building represented the Gothic style, but during the great earthquake in 1880 it was destroyed. As a result of renovation works, the church has gained a new shape, its facade today has features of the neo-Gothic style.

According to the local legend of St. Franciszek lived for some time in Zagreb, he stayed in the house of a very rich widow, who gave her land to build a monastery and a church dedicated to the saint.
