Church of the Holy Cross

Local name: Crkva Svetog Križa

The Holy Cross Church in Vodice is widely recognized as the most interesting example of Baroque religious architecture in the Dalmatian region. Noteworthy is the tower with a bell tower, as well as such architectural elements as the decorative rosette above the main entrance and oval windows.

The most valuable monuments inside the temple include the richly decorated main altar and frescoes by Eugenio Moretti Varese, made in the 1850s. They depict the Holy Family, the Heart of Jesus and saints Wincent and Stanisław Kostka.

The Holy Cross Church was built on the site of a previously existing chapel. The building was built according to the design and under the supervision of the famous Croatian Baroque architect, Ivan Skok. Construction lasted from 1746 to 1749, and the church was consecrated in 1960. The tower and bell tower were built by Vicko Macanović Dubrovčanin, and it took twenty years to build it.
