Split Ethnographic Museum

Local name: Etnografski muzej Split

The Ethnographic Museum, or the Ethnographic Museum in Split, has over 20,000 collections. exhibits, among which are traditional folk costumes, a collection of musical instruments, weapons and jewelry. The museum is housed in the Gothic building of the former town hall, erected in 1443. The town hall was built in the Diocletian's Palace, in place of the original cubiculum, i.e. imperial bedrooms.

At the museum's permanent exhibitions you can see above all a rich collection of craft furniture, a panorama of costumes worn by the inhabitants of Split from the Middle Ages to the present day, and folk handicrafts. A traditional olive press, bedroom and living room with equipment from the early 20th century were also reconstructed.

An attraction for children is a large collection of popular toys, board games and figurines depicting characters from famous fairy tales. The museum also has a collection of several thousand negatives of the Croatian photographer Dragutin Stühler (1886-1954), who documented the historical heritage of Dalmatia.
