Bell tower and chapel of St. Raynerius

Local name: Zvonik i kapelica Svetog Arnira

Zvonik and the chapel of Svetog Arnira, i.e. the bell tower and chapel of St. Rajner from Split are the remains of a former Benedictine monastery. The chapel was part of the church of St. Euphemia, which existed here already in the eleventh century. The impressive tower was built in the eighteenth century. The monastery operated until the capture of Split by Napoleon's army, when in 1806 it was transformed into a military hospital.

The church was seriously damaged as a result of a great fire in 1888, and the bombing in 1944 put an end to its existence. Only the tower and the chapel survived. The latter, built in 1444, is the work of the famous architect and sculptor Juraj Dalmatinac. You can see in it a copy of the sarcophagus (the original is in Kaštel Lukšić) St. Rajner, stoned to the Mosor mountain in 1180.

In the vicinity of the belfry there is a monumental statue of Gregory of Nin (died in 929) - a bishop who is credited with trying to introduce the Croatian language to the Catholic liturgy. The monument by Ivan Meštrovic was unveiled on the anniversary of the 1000th anniversary of the bishop's death.
