Slavonski Brod is a border town on the Sava River. For centuries it has been at the crossroads of important communication routes in this part of Europe. The evidence of its former splendor and significance is the 18th century Brod fortress.
The history of the city dates back to Roman times, when there was a settlement here called Marsonia. Already in medieval times, the city by the ford in Sawa had important commercial functions. Earlier fortifications were transformed into a fortress only in Turkish times. In the 18th century, the stronghold defended a strategic crossing deep into the Balkans. Today, inside the fortress walls, you can visit historic casemates. Numerous cultural and historical events also take place here.
The Old Town in Slavonski Bród is mainly Baroque. Precious monuments include the churches of the Holy Trinity and St. Stefan and the Franciscan monastery, in which the museum of the poet Dragutin Tadijanović is currently operating.
Due to its location between the river and the low, picturesque hills, Slavonski Brod is a good starting point for people who like active tourism. You can go canoeing on Sawa, while the surrounding areas are great for hiking and cycling.
In recent years, viticulture has also been increasingly revived in these areas. Vineyards cover the hillsides and you can participate in tastings on the farms.
