Church and Monastery of St. Francis

Local name: Crkva i samostan sv. Franje

Crkva and self-sv. Franje, or the monastery and church of St. Francis. They were erected at the same time and the construction was completed in 1314. It was built according to the design and under the supervision of the construction master brother Jakov from Pula, in the place of the former church of St. John the Baptist. In the main altar of the church there is a gilded wooden polyptych from the middle of The 15th century - is one of the most valuable preserved examples of Gothic woodcarving throughout Istria.

The Franciscans arrived in Pula shortly after St. In 1209 (1210), Francis received the consent of Pope Innocent to found a religious order according to a rule he wrote. One of the first Franciscans in Pula was St. Otton, who was credited with many miraculous healings. His relics are kept in the church, and the cult of St. Otto is still alive in Pula.

The Franciscan church and monastery complex in Pula combines monumentality with simplicity and functionality. It is built according to a simple rectangular plan, sparingly decorated, raw in the decor - it is considered an architectural reflection of the Franciscan religious rule.
