Burnum is one of the most popular archaeological sites in Croatia. There was a Roman legion camp and town here. The remains include the praetorium, the foundations of several rooms, the remains of arched arcades, the amphitheater and the aqueduct. The camp was built in the first century AD during the reign of Emperor Claudius, and expanded during the reign of Vespasian. According to some sources, the rebellion of Lucius Arruntius Kamilus Skrybbonian against Emperor Claudius in 42 began in this camp.
The Burnum Roman military camp was built to control the river border crossing. It was destroyed by the Goths in 537. Today, archaeological works are still carried out here, and the objects found are in the Archaeological Museum in Zadar. The facility is located within the Krka National Park, away from the main attractions. That is why it is not included in the organized tour program.
