A large stone cross on Srđ Hill was built in 1935 to commemorate the 1900 anniversary of Christ's death on the cross. During the civil war (1991–1995) from October 1991 to May 1992, blockade and intense shelling of Dubrovnik continued, during which the cross was demolished. The cross currently standing on the hill dates from 1997.
Dubrovnik was defended by the Croatian army, which stood against the combined forces of the Army of the Republika Srpska Krajina and the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA). The cross on Srđ Hill was destroyed by Serbian artillery during the toughest fights for Dubrovnik on December 6, 1991. Defenders placed a wooden cross in its place to show the city's inhabitants that the hill was not conquered.
Every year at Easter and on the Day of the Defenders of Dubrovnik on December 6, the Way of the Cross is led to Srđ Hill, whose last station is a stone cross. In 2003, during a pilgrimage to Croatia, Pope John Paul II visited Dubrovnik. During the solemn beatification mass of Mary of Jesus Crucified, Petković blessed the shards of the destroyed cross from Srđ Hill that they became the cornerstones for the construction of new temples in the Diocese of Dubrovnik.
