Bokar Fortress was the most important point of defense of the Pile Gate - the western land entrance to Dubrovnik. The fortress erected in 1463 according to the design of the Florentine builder Michelozzo di Bartololmeo is considered an example of a harmonious combination of defensive functions and architectural perfection. Currently, it serves as a viewpoint and a place for cultural events.
Bokar was built on a small promontory cutting into the sea and a rock detached from it. It was connected to the headland with stone arches, and on them a front part of the fortress was built, under which water flows to this day. Originally, the two-story building was almost entirely erected in front of the defensive walls to provide the batteries inside it with the largest angle of fire possible. The fortress casemates housed a gunpowder magazine and a weapons warehouse.
The construction of the fortress carried out in the years 1461-1463 was not completed, as evidenced by the record in the city chronicles talking about the debate on the finalization of the project, which took place in 1470. It was only in 1555 that the building was roofed and its present shape obtained after modernization carried out in 1570.
