Church of St. Blaise

Local name: Crkva svetog Vlaha

The church Błażeja was built in the 14th century. It has not survived in its original shape - it was repeatedly destroyed by earthquakes and fires, and then rebuilt in accordance with the then trends in architecture. Currently, it is a Baroque building, which owes its form to the reconstruction after the fire carried out in 1706-1715 by the Italian construction master, Marina Gropelli. The oldest preserved element of the temple is the fifteenth-century statue of St. Błażeja, located next to the marble main altar.

The sculpture presents the patron of Dubrovnik as a man in episcopal robes, who holds in his right hand a model of the city from before the great earthquake in 1667. Church of St. Błażeja was shelled during the civil war (1991–1992), as a result of which the roof and the northern facade were seriously damaged. The statue survived all cataclysms that affected the temple. The faithful pray for healing - especially for throat diseases. This has to do with the legend of how St. Błażej miraculously healed the boy who choked on fish bones.

The main feast of the church and the day of the liturgical remembrance of Saint. Błażeja is a parish church fair held on February 3. It is part of the celebrated festival of St. Błażeja, inscribed on the UNESCO list of intangible heritage. The festival begins on February 2 by pulling a banner with the image of a saint onto Roland's column in front of the church. On February 3, a procession with the saint's relics starts from the CIS Cathedral. Religious ceremonies are accompanied by numerous cultural and entertainment events.
