The castle in Čakovec is a fortified medieval fortress located in the city center. He is known as Stari grad Zrinskih, because of his family, who for a long time was its owners. The castle is the largest fortification in the district of Međimurje. The main palace of the castle has a museum of this region, while the atrium serves as an open-air theater in the summer months. In 2007, Čakovec Castle was classified as a protected cultural asset of Croatia.
The first mention of the fortress comes from the thirteenth century. The castle was built by Baron Dimitrije Čak from hewn stone and red brick. It received its present shape under the rule of the Althan family around 1743. The former Renaissance palace of Zrinskih was then transformed into a monumental baroque castle. Around him extends also a vast park called Perivoj Zrinski.
